A compact tractor in the 25–45 HP range handles most 5-acre homestead tasks well — mowing, tilling a large garden, loader work, and post hole digging. If you plan to bale hay, grade roads, or handle significant brush clearing, size up to a utility tractor in the 45–65 HP range.
Sub-compact tractors (under 25 HP) work for 1–3 acres of light-duty work. They struggle with heavy brush hogging, significant loader work, or large tillers. If you have more than 3 acres or plan to do regular loader or PTO work, a compact 25–45 HP tractor is usually the better long-term choice.
A front-end loader (FEL) is the single most versatile attachment on a homestead. It handles manure, hay, gravel, brush, and leveling work. Buy a loader-compatible tractor and purchase the loader at the same time — retrofitting a loader later costs more and limits compatibility.
